Sudans Working Group: A Private Discussion with His Excellency Professor Ibrahim Ahmed Omer, Speaker of Parliament of the Republic of the Sudan
On February 28, 2017, the Wilson Center Africa Program convened a meeting of the Sudans Working Group that focused on new developments in U.S.-Sudan relations, as well as developments in the country’s peace process and issues of inclusivity, counterterrorism, and stability. The meeting featured a private discussion with His Excellency Professor Ibrahim Ahmed Omer, Speaker of Parliament of the Republic of the Sudan.
Overview
On January 13, 2017, the Obama Administration announced it would, for a 6-month provisional period, ease financial sanctions against the government of Sudan. On February 28, 2017, the Wilson Center Africa Program convened a meeting of the Sudans Working Group that focused on new developments in U.S.-Sudan relations, as well as developments in the country’s peace process and issues of inclusivity, counterterrorism, and stability. The meeting featured a private discussion with His Excellency Professor Ibrahim Ahmed Omer, Speaker of Parliament of the Republic of the Sudan, and was moderated by Ambassador Alan Goulty, co-chair of the Wilson Center Africa Program’s Sudans Working Group. H.E. Omer; Mr. Mohamed Mustafa Eldaw, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee; Ms. Afaf Abdel Rahman, and Mr. Mohamed Hakim, Members of the Foreign Relations Committee; and representatives from the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, including Ambassador Maowia Osman Khalid, met with policymakers, practitioners, and other experts.
Through the Sudans Working Group, the Africa Program provides a platform for engaging U.S., African, and international policymakers and stakeholders in inclusive and forward-leaning dialogue aimed at advancing the prospects for peace, security, and development between and within the Sudans. The Sudans Working Group is co-chaired by Ambassador Goulty and Ambassador Nureldin Satti.
