Overview

The Wilson Center Africa Program’s Sudans Working Group met on Thursday, November 29, 2018 for a private roundtable discussion with Ambassador ThomasHushek, U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan. Mr. Mike Morrow, a Senior Diplomatic Fellow at the Wilson Center, offered welcome remarks. Ambassador Alan Goulty, former United Kingdom Ambassador to Sudan, Africa Program Global Fellow, and Co-Chair of the Sudans Working Group, moderated the discussion. The roundtable included representatives from the government, NGOs, and academic sectors from the United States and Africa. The discussion focused on U.S. policy toward South Sudan and developments with the 2018 peace agreement. Participants spoke on the progress made in the region while voicing their worries over the ongoing conflicts and the danger faced by international and local aid workers. The participants debated critical avenues for improvement such as increased polling to give more voice to South Sudanese citizens, addressing aid manipulation, the role of international partners, and more. The event proved a good opportunity for open analysis of the current status of South Sudan, U.S. policy, and the 2018 peace agreement.

Through the Sudans Working Group, the Africa Program provides a platform for engaging U.S., African, and international policymakers and stakeholders in inclusive and forward-leaning dialogue aimed at advancing the prospects for peace, security, and development between and within the Sudans. The Sudans Working Group is co-chaired by Ambassador Alan Goulty and Ambassador Nureldin Satti.
